Day 13 – Surfer’s Paradise

Today we did exactly what we set out to do – nothing!

But, just have to mention our dinner last night.  I said if I don’t mention it, it was meh.  Well. It was so much worse than meh.  It was an extremely over-priced buffet.  Think Golden Corral, but paying $100 per person.  So absolutely disappointed.  I have no idea how it could be the #4 restaurant in Surfer’s Paradise unless everyone who lives here and visits here has no taste whatsoever. 😠 (This program doesn't have a puke emoji or I would have used it.)

Anyway, Lee got up at the crack of dawn (5:30 AM) to take a walk on the beach.  (I was awake, but not really ready to get out of bed.  I think it’s just a mental block – I’m not meant to be up at 5:30 AM, no matter what time my body thinks it is. 😁)

He got some really nice pictures.










We walked down the promenade and found some breakfast, then there was a sort of outdoors mall we explored.  They had a Woolworth’s, which is a grocery store chain here.  So I managed to find some vegemite (for our upcoming Around the World family dinner.  I chose Australia for my country and am going to make Aussie Meat Pies.)  And we saw this, which made me smile.

They had these cool motorized rides which also made me smile.

Then, we just came back to the hotel and lounged by the pool.  We got a reserved cabana, which was very nice.  I had a delicious Campari Spritzer, and spent most of the afternoon with Frodo on his journey leaving the Shire.


I also got a picture of one the girls in the elevators.  😂

Lee chose a restaurant for dinner tonight, so fingers crossed it’s not horrible.  Then tomorrow morning, we will check out, head over to Wahlburger’s to watch the Superbowl for a while (starts at 9:30 AM here), catch our Uber at noon to the airport, fly back to Sydney, and that will be the end of our adventures.  We fly from Sydney to Charleston Tuesday morning.  (It’s like time travel – we leave Sydney at 11:50 AM on Tuesday and land in Houston at 10:25 AM on Tuesday.  Crazy! 😉)

    I just finished watching the game. LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT !! Except the halftime show. It's the first time I remember turning the channel during a halftime show. Sorry, I couldn't take it.
    Absolutely outstanding photos of the Sunrise 🌅. Hats off to Lee for those.
    I can't believe it, but as I look out the window....I SEE IT SNOWING AGAIN !
    You know I love snow, but it's starting to break records and I'm actually getting tired of it. I've got a tad of news for ya after you get home. I think it's good..... well, let's say it's NOT bad.
    And, I would really love to see the ocean again. It's been to long....I will sign off now and talk to ya when you're back on Carolina ground.....enjoy the rest of the journey..... and just cause your coming home doesn't mean the journeys over !! Chat with ya soon.

      We got to watch the first half at Wahlburgers. Also hated the halftime show. Ubered to the airport. They were showing the game on delay, so even though we knew who won, we could see the second half. Our flight keeps getting delayed longer and longer. We should be on board now but it’ll be at least 2 more hours. There are storms between here and Sydney. Hopefully we’ll get out of here soon!

Day 6 – Waiheke Island

Today is our 40 th Wedding Anniversary (at least in New Zealand. 😉)  This is the newspaper announcement my parents put in the Potsdam newspaper. (Yes - I saved it in a little tin box that has travelled around the world for 40 years.) Today was another fantastic day.  We caught the 9 AM ferry to Waiheke Island for a winery tour.  We took an earlier ferry than we had planned, so walked around a bit while waiting for the tour pick-up. Day 11 – Brisbane

Today we took a river cruise to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.  The cruise was quite leisurely.  On the way up the river to the Sanctuary, there was recorded commentary about the buildings and bridges we were seeing.  Some of the houses were quite amazing.  He told us about the Brisbane River flooding.  It’s flooded a few times, but the last time was in 2022 and he said it was devastating.  Most of the homes along the river had boat docks, but there weren’t many boats.  He said that’s because the boats were destroyed or sunk during the flood and the owners have not replaced them. There was a couple on the cruise celebrating their 66 th wedding anniversary!   And, they said they are coming back in 2 years because the woman turns 100.   Amazing! T-1: Preparing to leave.

  We’re almost packed and ready to go.  I saw in the news a corpse flower dubbed Putricia has finally bloomed at the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney. The plant, also known as  Amorphophallus titanum , has the biggest, smelliest flower spike in the world. Corpse flowers are rare and endangered and usually found in the West Sumatran rainforests, with estimates that there are less than 1,000 specimens left in the wild.  Putricia blossomed on Thursday afternoon after first showing signs about a week and a half ago.   Unfortunately, they only bloom for 24 hours so we have missed smelling putrid Putricia.  😂
