Day 8 – Fiji

Last night, sitting on our balcony, we saw this beautiful sight. 

We decided to book an excursion with the South Seas Cruises.  (Thanks, security woman! 😀 It really was an excellent suggestion.  Their operations ran like a well-oiled machine, while all the while being very friendly.)  They were scheduled to pick us up in the lobby at 8 AM, so we decided to order a continental breakfast for two from room service to save time.  This is what we received for 2 people – along with two coffees, an orange juice, and a banana smoothy!!  We’ll be eating that for breakfast tomorrow ( and maybe the next day!)

So they picked us up and took us to the high speed catamaran from Port Denarau to South Sea Island. 


Once there, there were plenty of activities (if one wanted to participate.)  I just wanted to lie on my beach chair and read my book.  Lee chose to go snorkeling.  He said he really enjoyed it.  He saw purple-crown jellyfish, starfish, coral, and lots of different fish.  No pictures of the fish, though. Just this one of the boat leaving for the reef.

After Lee got back from snorkeling, he found a hermit crab.

I forgot to say that the Fijian greeting is Bula, which stands for “good life, health, and happiness.”  (I thought when we first arrived they were saying hola, but bula is actually pronounced mm-boo-lah.)  Anyway, everyone we come across says it.  We must have been bula-ed 100 times today. 😂 

This is the island welcome committee welcoming a new boatload of visitors.  Everyone has to yell Bula at the top of their lungs.  😂

They provided a buffet lunch, which was pretty good, then we had Fijian entertainment.  There was singing and dancing.  Most of the singing was in Fijian, so we had no idea what they were saying.  Maybe, "We hate you tourists.  Go back to where you came."  LOL.  Probably not, but that's just the way my mind works. 






When they entertainers were done, they took pictures with whoever wanted one. 



Then we departed South Sea Island to visit a number of other islands.  We didn’t actually get off the catamaran, so it was honestly kind of boring.  But we did get to see Castaway Island.  Castaway (the movie) was actually filmed on Monuriki Island, but both are part of the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji.  We also saw some over-water huts.  (I had considered staying there.  Now I’m a little sad I didn’t look into it further. And sorry for the sleeping guy's head in the picture.  I didn't do a very good job on that one. 😂)





I was curious on the way back as to what the temperature was, but my phone was of little help.  😆


Then it was back to Port Denarau and Radisson Blu.  We have one more day in Fiji.  Haven’t made any firm plans yet, but I’m sure whatever we decide to do will be great.

    Oh how I wish I was there ! But that would kinda ruin your anniversary vacation.... I think I would really enjoy seeing the dancers ! It doesn't matter what your phone says (or doesnt)

  We’re almost packed and ready to go.  I saw in the news a corpse flower dubbed Putricia has finally bloomed at the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney. The plant, also known as  Amorphophallus titanum , has the biggest, smelliest flower spike in the world. Corpse flowers are rare and endangered and usually found in the West Sumatran rainforests, with estimates that there are less than 1,000 specimens left in the wild.  Putricia blossomed on Thursday afternoon after first showing signs about a week and a half ago.   Unfortunately, they only bloom for 24 hours so we have missed smelling putrid Putricia.  😂

Day 6 – Waiheke Island

Today is our 40 th Wedding Anniversary (at least in New Zealand. 😉)  This is the newspaper announcement my parents put in the Potsdam newspaper. (Yes - I saved it in a little tin box that has travelled around the world for 40 years.) Today was another fantastic day.  We caught the 9 AM ferry to Waiheke Island for a winery tour.  We took an earlier ferry than we had planned, so walked around a bit while waiting for the tour pick-up. A small disappointment was that I thought I had booked a private tour, but it was actually a tour with 16 other people.  I didn’t want to make a big deal about it, as we only have this one day left here, so we went with the flow.  The other people were mostly friendly and we enjoyed talking to them.  Could have done without the snooty guy who commented as he was getting to his seat on the shuttle, “This must be what it’s like to fly coach.”  There was one couple from Toronto that we really liked.  The wife was li...

Day 1 - Sydney

What a looong flight!  We were delayed in Houston because of weather, so were about an hour late landing in Sydney.  But, we made it!  Got to our hotel a little after 9 AM.  Here’s the view from our room. We had added early check-in to our reservation, so our room was all ready for us.  After refreshing showers, we headed out to see the sights.  (There’s a heat advisory today, so the afternoon was over 100!) We decided to do the Hop On/Hop Off bus so we could see where everything is and plan out our next days.   One of the bell hops told us how to get to the closest stop, but unfortunately we were directionally challenged today.   I feel like we walked around in circles for way too long.   But eventually we found it and hopped on. By this point, I was starving (breakfast on the plane was a disgusting cold mess), so at the first stop with restaurants, we hopped off.   Our first meal in Australia was pasta bolognaise and fish and chips...
