Day 9 – Fiji

Last night, the hotel manager held a Happy Hour.  We met two nice couples – both from Australia – one had been married 54 years and the other just got engaged in Fiji.  The young guy told Lee about Kava, which he is now obsessed with.  (Well, obsessed may be too harsh.  But he just bought some Kavalicious Fiji cookies at a shop. 😄)

After the Happy Hour, we went to the Italian restaurant for dinner.  I ordered lasagna, which was absolutely delicious.  Lee ordered spaghetti and clams, which was absolutely awful.  The spaghetti had no salt whatsoever, and the clams were all sandy.  Gross.  (The night before, we ate at the Blu Bar and Grill, which is next door to the Italian place.  I ordered spaghetti and prawns – also awful.  No flavor whatsoever.)  I didn’t complain about mine, but last night Lee did.  He said he could have lived with the non-salted pasta, but not the sandy clams.  So, since I had the manager’s card that he gave us at the Happy Hour, I gave him my thoughts.  Chef needs to learn to salt his pasta water!

During dinner, a big storm blew in.  It rained like crazy, so we tried to wait it out, then dodged the raindrops back to our room.

This morning, Lee had grading to do, so I sat on our balcony and finished the Hobbit.  Then we decided to venture down to Nadi downtown for sightseeing and perhaps lunch.  How depressing.  It was crowded, dirty, people begging.  We bought a souvenir, looked in a couple shops, and decided to go back to Port Denarau for lunch.  I was just afraid to chance any of the restaurants there.

The taxi driver on the way to the port told us tourists come to Nadi, go straight to the port and then to the outer islands without spending any time in Nadi itself.  I didn’t say it to him, but I don’t blame them.

At the port, we had a delicious lunch.  Lee's was looking at him.  Probably saying, "Why did you fry me??"  😂

This was the view.

And these little myna birds are everywhere.

After lunch, we got a few more souvenirs, then headed back to the hotel for some pool time.  It was pretty overcast and the wind was kind of cool, so I didn’t stay too long.

Tonight at 6:30 they are doing a Fijian Meke and Fire Show, so that should be fun.

That's it for today.  Tomorrow afternoon we head for Brisbane.
